Sit Down to Every Dining Affair in Comfort

Sure, you can always pull up any chair to the dining table and dig in, but only the most comfortable seating will really get the dinner table conservation started! We’ll help you discover the dining chair, stool, or bench that suits your dining space.

Dining Room Seating Basics

There are a couple of basics to follow in order to have the most comfortable seating. First, make sure that there are 12 inches between the top of your seat to the top of the table. Then, check that there are at least 7 inches between the top of the chair arms to the bottom of the table apron (the strip of material under the tabletop).

If you have a standard-height dining table, check that the seat height is 18 inches off the floor so everyone can rest his or her feet on the floor.

Be sure to leave 6 inches on either side of each chair so that everyone has enough arm room!

Dining Room Chairs

With your measurements in hand, it’s time to decide what type of dining seating you need.

Dining chairs are the basics and come in a variety of styles and configurations. Arm chairs are typically used at the end of each table, while side chairs are made to go along the side of the table—but the placement is entirely up to you.

And if you want to change up your dining room design, look for Parsons chairs that have solid backs, taller backs, and a sleek design. Upholstered dining chairs also work great for more formal dining occasions.

Dining Stools

Dining stools, or barstools, are another seating option for your dining room. Bar stools come in a variety of configurations, like adjustable height, backless or half-back designs, or swivel bases for added convenience. Plus, most feature a comfy footrest so you’re better supported throughout your meal at your bar or counter.

Keep in mind that counter stool seat heights are between 24 and 26 inches, while bar-height stool seats are between 40 and 42 inches, so be sure to measure accurately.

Dining Benches

Wondering whether you should get a dining bench? If you want to maximize seating space for two or three diners and allow for easier movement in and out, benches are the ticket! Be sure to try out benches with padding or soft upholstery so your home is all about comfortable dining.
