Care
Furniture is an important investment. Taking care
of your furniture will help protect it and allow you
to enjoy it for many years.
Upholstery
- Use of arm and headrest caps should be avoided
because they cause uneven wear, uneven soiling and
uneven fading. Arm and headrest caps also cause abrasion
on the fabric and hides beautiful tailoring.
- It is important to flip upholstery cushions regularly
to reduce “welt creep” (the bending of
the piping around the edge of a cushion), prevents
rounding of square edges, reduces body impressions
and evens out wear, fading and soiling.
- Do not clean cushion covers or pillows separately since
it may cause fading in color.
- Avoid fires by not smoking when drowsy, and removing
lighted cigarettes or glowing embers immediately from
furniture.
- Prolong the life of your furniture investment and
save money on the cost of cleaning and repair with

Sofa Sleepers
- Lift straight up when opening a sleeper sofa to
avoid back strain.
- Tie down the mechanism (with the skirt up to avoid
wrinkles) when moving.
- Remove plastic mattress cover.
- Remove thick blankets and quilts to avoid stress
on the mechanism when storing the sleeper portion
of the sofa.
- Be cautious of the locking bar when closing the
sleeper to avoid pinching fingers and clothing.
- When vacuuming raise the sleeper sofa high enough
to avoid dropping on your feet. Do not tilt or raise
the sofa when a small child is in the room.
- Sleeper mattresses are not intended to be flipped
– they are already hinged to the frame.

Wood Furniture
- Dining room and dinette table leaves should always
be stored flat to prevent warping (under a bed is
ideal) in storage bags.
- Do not store table leaves in a hot closet or a
damp basement.
- Fine wood furniture has natural markings such as
grain and color variations, as well as pits, scars
and distressing. These are natural traits and give
real wood its warmth and richness.

Dusting
- Dust can scratch furniture’s surface if it
is not removed properly.
- Always use a soft, clean cloth moistened with a
polish wiping in a circular motion to avoid scratching
and loosen old polish.
- Spray polish directly onto furniture, and for wood
trim spray the cloth first then dust.
- To get optimum shine and smudge-free finish buff
completely.
- Change your dusting cloths frequently to avoid
minute scratches caused by the dust on your cloth.
- Consistent use of the same polish will avoid a
cloudy appearance or streaking that comes from the
combined use of oil based and wax based finishes.
- Never use soap and/water on furniture, the water
can get underneath the finish and cause damage by
raising the wood grain.
- Avoid direct sunlight on your furniture by closing
window treatments during the day and rotating furniture
arrangement within the room.
- Remove all liquid spills immediately after they
occur by blotting (not rubbing) the surface gently.
- Use saucers and coasters under glassware, saucers,
vases and flower pots to avoid spills and liquid stains.
- Using protective padding and trivets under hot
dishes, heated appliances and utensils will avoid
white spots in the wood that can be caused by the
chemical change from the heat source.
- Keep the humidity within your home constant (between
25-40% is recommended) by using humidifiers in the
winter and air conditioners in the summer. This will
help avoid warping, cracking and splitting of wood
furniture.

Mattresses
- You may experience an adjustment period as you get
used to your new mattress set.
- It’s important for the longevity and comfort
that you experienced in the showroom to use a box
spring designed for your mattress, and use a strong,
solid foundation for your mattress set such as a metal
frame or bed base.
- Today’s mattresses are manufactured so that
you do not need to “flip” them. However,
you may wish to rotate it to avoid natural body impressions
in comfort-top type mattress sets.
- Your mattress set will be the piece of furniture
used most often in your home. Colder’s carries
PROTECT-A-BED Mattress Protectors to protect against
liquids and dust mites.
